Training for Young Scientists

Training for Young Scientists

As well as emphasizing outreach to the general community, outreach to the next generation of scientific researchers at various stages of their careers is an important program at CMMT.

School children, teachers, community groups and the general public learn about specific scientific issues being addressed by researchers in our labs and about the basics of how scientific information is gathered. CMMT has provided information to high schools around the province regarding the nature of research carried out, and the type of careers researchers enjoy (e.g., at teachers’ conventions). This allows CMMT to not only promote the biosciences, but also research in general to this young audience.

Young ScientistEvery spring, our researchers host a high school student to work in our labs for one week. The “Gene Researcher for a Week” program allows students to gain hands-on experience of the genetic research process and provides a great opportunity to participate in the excitement of our science. This educational program is a truly inspiring experience, both for the students and our researchers. During the March 2009 spring break Shannon Sibbald joined the Wasserman Lab, and the Kobor lab hosted Jessica Ho and David Kim.
