Research TraineesCMMT has attracted students and staff from more than 30 countries around the world. While our first language may not be the same, we are motivated by a shared and singular purpose, to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. We all believe that the pursuit of science is an essential step in the alleviation of suffering and we know that our discoveries not only help Canadian families, but are felt worldwide. About Our Training ProgramsHundreds of graduate students from the University of British Columbia, and post-doctoral fellows from all over the world, have been trained and nurtured at CMMT. All of the primary investigators at CMMT are part of UBC's Faculty of Medicine. Collectively they support around 40 graduate students and 30 post-docs at any one time. Our students come from graduate programs in biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, genetics, medical genetics, and neuroscience. CMMT faculty are strongly committed to supporting their students and are involved in developing curriculum, teaching classes, and providing work-study and volunteering opportunities. CMMT operates as a centre without walls with co-mentoring of trainees, access to expertise, and sharing of technology, equipment, and information between labs. This approach enhances and enriches the experience of our trainees. Trainees at CMMT can expect an exciting and diverse environment where they can learn from some of the best researchers and technical staff in the world."We built the CMMT because we needed to have a different way in which we conducted research," explains Dr. Hayden. "The silos often present in academia are not conducive to the partnerships needed for the conduct of research." Many CMMT trainees go on to become leaders in biomedical research and technology development at some of the top universities and research centres in the world. WHAT TRAINEES ARE SAYING ABOUT CMMT"People collaborate from the different labs, there are journal clubs and seminars on a weekly basis. it's a very rich academic environment for me." – Gelareh Mazarei, master's student in medical genetics. "People here are doing different types of research in many areas. you have greater choices and more possibilities here." – Siddhartha Srivastava, recent graduate with a master's in bioinformatics.
