Transgenic Facility

Transgenic Facility

The CMMT Transgenic Core Facility is unique in Western Canada, providing mouse transgenesis including knockout capabilities together with a large breeding capacity all within a strict barrier facility.

This facility generates transgenic mice by pronuclear injection of DNA based genetic constructs provided by CMMT and CFRI investigators, and from research groups from across Canada. Since 2002, the facility has generated more than 80 unique lines of mice, and provided embryo and sperm cryopreservation services on over 135 lines of mice for 20 research groups. In addition to the CMMT and CFRI investigators, these groups are located at the UBC, UVic, at the Universities of Calgary, Guelph, and Montreal, and our industry collaborators.

Following the completion of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI)-funded Laboratory for Functional Genomics (LFG) in June of 2005 and its linking with the existing Transgenic Core Facility, the combined facility now has 7,000 cage spaces—more than doubling its previous capacity. This redesign and expansion of the facility includes the introduction of stationary cage racks, an automatic water distribution system, and an automated bedding dispenser and disposal system that have dramatically improved the efficiency of operations as well worker safety.

This expanded facility now provides a dedicated mouse surgical suite, cryo-preservation capabilities for long-term storage of mouse lines, and a large laboratory space for working with mice within the facility barrier.
